History of The Super Jeep

The โ€œSuper Jeepโ€ was an appearance package that was produced due to the shortage of the mag aluminum slot wheels that were used on the popular Renegade trim package as well many of the 70โ€™s muscle cars. To keep up with sales and the shortage of aluminum slot wheels the Super Jeep Package was born. The Super Jeep Package took a base model Jeep Cj-5 and added a unique stripe and star decal from the hood and down the sides of the jeep. The decals came in two different color variations either Red and Blue or Orange and White based on the color of the jeep. The Super jeep was produced in 6 different color ways. These included Jetset Blue Metallic, Champagne White which got the red and blue stripe treatment. Daisy Yellow, Butterscotch Gold, Copper Tan Metallic and Fairway Green Metallic got the Orange and White striping. In addition to the Stripe package the Super Jeep included two two seats in either red and white or cinnamon and white based on the jeeps base color, Chrome curved front bumper, rubber fender flares, White visors and dash pad as well as L78-15 Goodyear Suburbanite Polyglas white wall tires and base model white steel wheels.

Production and Identifying

The Super Jeep was only produced for a few month (May- July 1973). The total production number is believed to be 300 or less! Unfortunately there is no definitive answer on how many were produced since most of AMCโ€™s records were lost or destroyed. Unlike most of the Special edition jeeps produced by AMC the Super Jeep was given a special order code (SSR & O No. D5596) located on the Trim tag on the firewall as well as one of two Trim codes (496 or 497) unique to only the Supers.
